For all houses or buildings, the most important starting point is the foundation and to get that right, builders hire us as an earthmoving contractor. We start with the footings, which are the bottom layer of the foundation, transferring the building’s weight down to the soil. The footing, or base, spreads the load of the house or building, dug deep enough into the ground to reach good firm soil that hasn’t been disturbed.

When excavating, we dig a trench that’s deep enough to get down to firm soil. Depending on the soil and the building, this can be as shallow as 30cm, or as deep as 1 metre for heavier and larger buildings or different soil conditions.

The site surveyor or specialist contractor will usually have identified how deep we have to dig, often in consultation with Rob as he discusses your site and project and decides which specialised mini excavator to work with. There are different kinds of footings, but all of them ensure that a foundation will have a solid base, minimal or no cracks; and no damp or water leaks issues.

Excavating foundations under existing buildings

Foundation excavations under existing houses or buildings are typically necessary if a basement floor has sustained water damage, perhaps from originally being constructed with inadequate drainage around exterior walls. Damage can occur to your house’s footings, foundation, floor or walls, which could see these start to subside, creating cracks to the foundation and even your house.
